ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Walk to the Beat Festival: This annual free festival takes place in Nyack, NY every summer and features percussive world music and dance. There are 4 stages with 24 hours of programming. One of the most important aspects of our festival is our wandering artists. We have 10 - 12 dedicated musicians and dancers hired specifically to perform short sets in 12 - 15 pre-determined businesses around the village. As the artists move from venue to venue, it encourages the public to join them, enjoying the music and dance, but also getting to know and explore Nyack and its businesses. It also gives the artists an opportunity to collaborate with any and all of the other artists. A great example of this was the "Walk to the Beat" song that was created spontaneously at last year's festival. At 6 pm Making Music Dance (our co-directors Anna and Heather's group) will give a special performance to celebrate their first CD release and premiere their new piece commissioned by New Music USA . At 7 pm we have a “jam session” in Memorial Park, where everyone is welcome to participate and play music together, artists and public. At 9 pm, join us for our after party at Nyack's Casa del Sol on Main Street. We are committed to creating an event where the public is invited to experience and play.

Stephanie Cadman
Stephanie Cadman
A world-renowned fiddler and step dance sensation
Stephanie Cadman is that rare, extraordinary thing: a quadruple threat. A world-renowned dancer, an accomplished actress of stage and screen, a virtuoso musician, and a knockout singer, Stephanie’s talents know no bounds. Maintaining a busy touring schedule both as a Canadian Folk Award-nominated solo musician and as a member of the all-female country trio Belle Starr, Stephanie has rocked audiences across North America and beyond. Between her starring role in the Grammy and Tony award winning Mirvish Production of Once, her celebrated career as an in-demand fiddler, and her breathtaking and award-winning dancing, Stephanie Cadman has proven herself to be one of Canada’s most versatile performers. Stephanie began her professional stage career at a young age as a lead in the hit musical Swingstep.  She went on to perform in Mirvish Productions’ Celtic reviewNeedfire, and the Broadway National Tour of 42nd Street. Widely-recognized as one of Canada’s top violinists, Stephanie’s stirring fiddle has also been featured inBowfire, the dynamic all-violin stage show. Along the way, she has appeared as a fiddler and tap dancer with symphonies across North America including the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra. Stephanie maintains a lively and successful career in popular music. She has released two solo albums, Celtic Blaze and the Canadian Folk Award nomineeFoggy New Year, both of which feature her impeccable fiddle and lonesome voice. As one third of the Americana supergroup Belle Starr, Stephanie sings, plays fiddle, and serves as the band’s percussionist as she tap dances through their jigs. Catching the attention of luminaries across the music industry, Stephanie has shared the stage with everyone from Oscar Peterson to the Chieftains, and toured extensively with Carlos Nunez, Lunasa, Lara St John and Sharon Shannon. Hailed by the The Guardian as an “incredibly talented” and “world-class” artist, Stephanie Cadman is just getting started. http://www.stephaniecadman.com/
Banda Magda group photo
Banda Magda
Greek World Fusion/ Group
Founded by Greek-born singer, film scorer, and composer Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda moves from samba to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando. Their songs capture the best of mid-century pop ballads and cinematic arranging, drawing on the band’s global background and unchained musicality. Trained in film scoring at Berklee, Giannikou’s film music finesse has won her awards and caught the attention of everyone from Kronos Quartet to   (she sang a duet with CK for the comedian’s TV show). Live, Banda Magda bursts with humor and quirky sensibility, powered by a unflagging energy. This group of close musical friends turn Giannikou’s songs into engaging romps that have won them a spot with Carnegie Hall Musical Explorers Series, as well as performances at discerning venues and festivals such as Webster Hall, Irving Plaza, The Kennedy Center, The Jefferson Center, Celebrate Brooklyn, Jazz al Parque, St. Moritz Festival Da Jazz, and the Chicago World Music Festival. After the success of their brilliantly colorful albums, "Amour, t’es là?" (Top 10 Billboard World Music Charts, NPR’s All Songs Considered, First Listen, NPR’s 10 favorite World Music Albums 2013), and "Yerakina" (co-produced by GRAMMY Award-winners Michael League and Fab Dupont), the Banda is in pre-production of their 3rd opus, the vibrant, Technicolor "Tigre" to be released in early 2016. www.bandamagda.com
Chiku Awali Ensemble
Chiku Awali
Rockland’s own African dance and drum performing ensemble
The Chiku Awali African Dance Company of Rockland, Inc. brings the sound of drums and the excitement of African dance to our Rockland County community.   Alexandreena Dixon, a retired New York State prison warden from Suffern, founded Chiku Awali as a not for profit organization in January 2003.  She did so to promote African dance and culture in Rockland County.   Ms. Dixon says there is intrinsic value in African dancing.  It is physically challenging, offers excellent cardio vascular activity, increases flexibility and coordination, and improves the attention span.   The Company’s name, Chiku Awali is a combination of Swahili and Ibo that means charterer and joy.  Thus, the name represents the joy of a new adventure. West African dance tells a story.  Some of the dances performed by Chiku Awali include Lamba and Funga which are dances of welcome.  The company children perform dances such as KouKou and Gundi, celebration dances for a good fishing catch, Hohoro, A dance symbolizing the chore of washing clothes, and Samba which has its roots in the African, South American diaspora.   The women perform the dance Sounou, to show off their dancing ability and beauty.  The dances Soli, Kassa, and Sinte are dances about the coming of age done by the community.  Drummers and their drums nurture the heart and soul of dancers.  Chiku Awali cultivates this craft through the Chiku Awali Obibini Asafo of Drums, which means the African Society of Drums in the Twi language of the Asante of Ghana.  The big drum, the Dun Dun maintains the bass, while the jembe players keep the various parts of the rhythm. Chiku Awali conducts a number of art projects throughout the year, such as African mask making, African storytelling, jewelry making, and Mancala designing.  Each year the organization produces African dances in concert: the Chiku Awali Experience—African Dance Extravaganza. For more information, visit www.chikuawali.org or call (845) 357-5062 Email: tafdixon@chikuawali.org .

Anna de la Paz and Heather Cornell are performers who work extensively away from home.  They are both committed to bringing the excitement of percussive music and dance performance to Rockland County in ways that will enrich the community.  There are so many wonderful artists who make their homes in the county and many, though internationally renowned, don’t have nearly enough opportunity to play “at home”.  Heather and Anna are hoping to share the artistic riches that can be found right here in our community, while at the same time inspiring people to try out their own creativity.
